The Netherlands at a Glance

  • The Netherlands is densely populated and has two capitals: Amsterdam (the official capital) and The Hague (the seat of government.)
  • There are 20 million bicycles in the Netherlands – nearly everyone travels to work or school by bike!
  • The Dutch language is considered to be English’s closest linguistic relative. Though English is widely spoken and understood, by learning Dutch you’ll be able to more fully integrate into your host family, school, and community.
  • Dutch cuisine is generally simple and straightforward, with lots of baked goods, vegetables, and fish. You’ll also see some influence from Indonesia and other former Dutch colonies reflected in the cuisine. Try a stroopwafel or some of the country’s famous cheeses!
  • The Netherlands has produced some of the world’s most famous artists, including Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, and Rembrandt.
