| The ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITY is the cornerstone of a successful local FLEX Program.
Enhancement Activities
Cluster Leaders are required to organized FOUR standard Enhancement Activities throughout the year (2 per semester). The Enhancement Activities must cover the each following topics: Leadership/Citizenship, Democracy/Government, Diversity, and Free Market Economy. The Enhancement Activities can be held in any order.
Each Enhancement Activity must include:
(1) A 30-60 minute Skills Development Workshop
(2) A Group Activity
(3) A brief written evaluation of the Workshop and Activity
Materials will be provided by Aspect Foundation, including workshop outlines, suggested group activities, evaluation forms, student journals and related books.
1. Leadership/Citizenship
WORKSHOP: This Enhancement Activity will begin with students participating in a leadership workshop based upon the Giraffe Heroes Program.
RECOMMENDED GROUP ACTIVITY: The leadership workshop will be followed by a group visit to the local City Council meeting, where FLEX & YES/YES students will observe grassroots democracy-in-action firsthand.

2. Democracy/Government
WORKSHOP: This Enhancement Activity will begin with a workshop in which students explore ideas of democracy and government in their personal lives using materials from Close-Up Foundation and other resources.
RECOMMENDED GROUP ACTIVITY: The workshop will be followed by an opportunity to witness US government firsthand by a meeting with state and local politicians.

3. Diversity
WORKSHOP: This Enhancement Activity will commence with a workshop in which students will discuss diversity constructively and learn to express disagreement over ideas or beliefs in a respectful manner. The workshop will draw upon materials from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching.
RECOMMENDED GROUP ACTIVITY: The workshop will be followed by a relevant local activity, such as a visit to a civil rights or Holocaust museum. Students will also be encouraged to use their personal FLEX & YES Journals to document their experiences with diversity in the US, and to reflect on what changes, if any, they find in their perception of others.

4. Free Market Economy
WORKSHOP: This Enhancement Activity will begin with a workshop designed to give students a fundamental understanding of free enterprise so that they are prepared to meet the challenges of a global economy. Cluster Leader is encouraged to invite a Junior Achievement representative to speak to the group and to discuss JA opportunities in their home countries.
RECOMMENDED GROUP ACTIVITY: The workshop will be followed by a visit to a local business leader, where students will interview the entrepreneur and learn how people can create opportunities for themselves.
